Ossified- harden, turn into bone, cease development.
Ameliorate- make (something) better.
Portentous- An omen, sign that something important is likely to happen.
Pedantic- (of) a person obsessed with minor details or technical knowledge.
Moratorium- a temporary ban on an activity.
